The Lost Album resurrects six lengthy and largely acoustic tracks recorded in by West African singer Salif Keita and his longtime collaborator, guitarist Kante aphrenanthbigfuncchin.apdodogesiseloohorgaculosi.col partners since the late '60s, first in the Rail Band and then in Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux, Keita and Manfila seem to be moving away from that group's somewhat westernized Afro-pop sound with these sessions.8/

As a pair, Keita and Manfila are often cited as Africa's "Lennon & McCartney", and to hear their genius on The Lost Album only furthers that analogy. Keita's powerful, soaring vocals, Manfila's intricate, relaxed guitar work, lilting female call-and-response vocals, shimmering kora and bittersweet trumpet create a truly dramatic listening /5(4).

While I agree that the sound quality of Salif Keita's "The Lost Album" isn't as clear as that heard in his later recordings, I've always assumed that the album's hazy, slightly grainy sound was intentional, and done for the same reasons that led Kieta's band to play in the relaxed, unhurried manner heard in this album.

In Keita opened a club in Bamako and released an album of the same name Moffou, which returned to a more mellow sound with guitar work by old bandmate Kante Manfila. This may have led to an album they recorded on the Ivory Coast in being given a worldwide release as The Lost Album, as interest in the more African and acoustic based.

In , Salif moved to France and started a solo career and his first solo album, the outstanding «Soro» created a buzz among music fans. The album is seen as innovating because of the, for African music of that decade, particularly high production standards (the album has been produced by François Bréant), and because of the unique mix.
